The UK World Salsa Championship 2008 Review...-

Along with Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and New York, Colombia and Venezuela are
two of the geographical Salsa super powers.
DJ El Chino page

WINNERS

CIHAT CAN & GIZEM
We care about putting popular and risky figures in the choreography while preparing the choreography. But, we always use figures which we discovered and identified with us. One of them are: The snake figure by Gizem, man’s landing to the ground by opening legs from double spin, women’s getting her head back by 90 degree while turning...more

RANDY PLAZA & "The Legacia De La Salsa" - SALSA FROM PUERTO RICO
Randy Plaza: I think that today the tropical genre of salsa has lost a lot of grounds and it is still losing a lot of grounds in the market. Everyone is in it for themselves and for whatever money they can get. They do not care for the passion of music, nor to play for joy, but to play for personal interest. They do not even feel the need to teach the younger generation the importance of keeping our tradition alive and to learn their roots.

Legacia De La Salsa is traditional salsa for the true dancer with a romantic soul. We feel the necessity to revisit and feed-off the roots of our musical tradition, in order to have an evolutive reencounter with the future of this musical genre...more

NILS FISCHER and "¡GRACIAS JOE CUBA!
A world renown congaplayer, base in Netherlands

Nils: There is so much Latin music, hard question! Let me put it like this: I just follow my heard when I play, record or produce. As I said, I don't approach music commercially. I like all the different "déjes" of Latin music but I would rather not go for salsa romantica or bachata for my own projects. What I like is progressive, interesting music which is connected to traditions as well. Innovation is the tradition of good music!. The Latin music market is so conservative at times, people only want to hear what have been hearing already.
I really love "Fania All Stars", but now we are 30 years ahead. It makes no sense to just copy the old stuff, I would say with my music I try to do something new. Otherwise I put the old records... I hope that our version of Joe Cubas repertoire illustrates all that...more

GIRALDO PILOTO "KLIMAX" SALSA TIMBA FROM CUBA

His last release
Piloto: I have many influences
The most important was the work left my Father Giraldo pilot Bea. This influence gives my songs "a tap" romantic and different texts to most of the timberas songs, and when I was in school it was this inspiration that made me want to be a composer. I grew up listening to bands and jazz and Cuban music. I admire the work of many drummers like Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd, Peter E., Dennis Chambers, Billy C, Dave Weckl, and many more. Also I follow, Yellow Jackets, the Marsalis, Brecker and Brazilian musicians...more

"RIGO Y SU OBRA MAESTRA" SALSA FROM PUERTO RICO

"Rigo y su Obra
Maestra" CD

Rigo: Back in the late 70’s I created my first composition, and when I played my first composition for the public, that was very exciting. Also, my first tour to San Francisco, USA, the way that salseros reacted to my music was excellent. When my band appeared in a Movie called “Desamores” in 2003 it was also a defining moment. We played the musical theme of the Movie and it was very emotional. Also the 2007 and 2008 Puerto Rico salsa congress...more

OLIVER AND "LA RUTA SIN FIN" SALSA FROM VENEZUELA

Oliver CD
Oliver: I wanted to do a cover that nothing to do with the letters of the songs but that simultaneously something was tied to them.
" The Route without end", all the songs were written on a train or on a plane, in a few moments of relaxation. This has been my life, a wonderful way but also stormy, like has been my history a “Route without end"...more

'FARFALLA' ARGENTINE TANGO GROUP

Farfalla CD

We describe our music (just for fun) as “KILLER TANGO”, but I don’t think that this definition is far away from reality. We love tango, but we refuse to see it as a touristy thing, so we change it, we kill it. Starting with drums, that are not a tango instrument, we try to develop a new tango vocabulary, more related with today’s new urban culture rather than to an obvious tango postal...more

THE 'PALLADIUM' HISTORY OF A MOST PROMINENT DANCE HALL ( NY CITY ) Part 6

Located in the Bronx, the Chester Palace was a traditional ballroom providing live orchestra music. Joe proved to be a natural whether dancing the Fox Trot or its faster, more rhythmic counterpart, the Peabody, at that he also excelled. It is at the Savoy where bandleaders Count Basie and Duke Ellington led ensembles that played `swing’ and Joe, a frequent patron, came to be regarded among its top ‘Lindy Hoppers’...more

THE 'PALLADIUM' HISTORY OF A MOST PROMINENT DANCE HALL ( NY CITY ) Part 5

M.T. Each teacher gave private lessons at about $50 or $60 an hour. Most lessons were given one-on-one and not to more than two students, meaning a couple, and a lot of teachers also would dance with a student in the evenings for an additional $50. Another thing I’d like to mention are the dance hosts hired by the operator of the dance weekend.
The dance hosts were hired by the person running the dance weekend. They were well dressed and with charm behind them. They were not allowed to socialize with the ladies, but only go from area to area with different them...more

FELIX MANUEL RODRIGUEZ - AND HIS BOOK "DAD, ME, and MUHAMMAD ALI"

Felix: Material things can never replace the priceless moments spent with your children. I know there are many parents that believe buying material things makes it up to their children, however they are sadly mistaken. I can relate to this because my dad left our home when I was about 5 years old and when he did show up, it was to give me and my brother some money. Now as a grown-up, I wished my dad would have taken me fishing, to a baseball game or simply played catch with me. The moments spent together are the most important, and all the money in the world can’t buy precious time back.

Muhammad Ali has inspired this poor, skinny Puerto Rican kid from the public housing projects to believe that he too can make a positive difference in the world, by simply expressing appreciation, love, and care for people of his race…the human race. I hope that in 10 years, I have inspired others to make a positive difference in the world like Ali inspired me..more

THE 'SECOND PALLADIUM' - - Part 4

THE CANDOMBE

Candombe is the traditional drumming of the Afro-Uruguayan people living in the city of Montevideo, where this music was born. Born in the Barrios in the city of Montevideo, Candombe is the heart beat of Carnival in Uruguay...more

PEREZ PRADO "THE MAMBO KING"

Though diminutive in stature, Pérez Prado was a giant in the world of post-war popular music. Dubbed "The Mambo King," he reigned supreme as one of the most influential pop orchestra leaders of the early 1950s. As the mambo rhythm spread across the continents, a society emerged from the dark years of World War II to shed it's inhibitions and embrace the frenzy of this Afro-Cuban beat...more

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MAMBO DANCE CONTEST AT "PALLADIUM"
HOME OF MAMBO (NY. City late 40’s until the early 60’s.)

Michael Terrace
The dance contest became the main attraction, it was to witness a scene of dirty dancing in mambo jazz tempo. With in its combination of street style hip-moving mambo and rumba dancing, the mood was overwhelmingly provocative, sensual and always mesmerizing. Americans would use the phrase “shave and a haircut; shampoo!” to simulate the beat until it became synonymous with “Via, means go-go-go!” Trumpets blared one way while the sax section blew another....more

'EL CAJON' ORIGIN

The peruvian slaves simply used boxes as musical instruments to combat contemporary Spanish colonial bans on music in predominantly African areas. In this way, cajóns could easily be disguised as seats or stools, thus avoiding identification as musical instruments.
