Definition
of a true salsa jam?
It's
the performance on (Mon. Oct. 21,2002) with "Fania
legend" Johnny Pacheco featuring vocalist Hector
Casanova and Ray Viera...also "master violinist"
Alfredo De La Fe. There were surprise guest performances
by Papo Lucca (Sonora Ponceña), Jose Alberto
"El Canario" and Little Johnny (LP percussionist
& ex-Sonora Ponceña member).
It’s
also Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) with Lebron Brothers, exclusively
celebrating their 35th anniversary andpractically setting
the dance floor ablaze with plenty of Hot Salsa with
Soul. Lead vocalist Luisito Ayala was on hand to please
the audience and as always...came through like a prize
fighter. The second set was good enough to put on the
Madison Square Garden stage with surprise performers
Jimmy Bosch, Bobby Allende & Marc Quiñones
taking the stage to join in on the fun...and like that's
not enough...our friend...singer, composer, actor, etc....Ruben
Blades modestly makes his presence on stage. Ruben astounds
the audience with his vocal improvisations. We were
also honored with a guest visit by legendary Johnny
Colon (Original Merencumbe-1972).
The
only night where the selection of live acts, the high
standards and the programming of the music
is done by yours truly... a DJ who's name is recognized
around the world and for over 20 years,
has proudly catered exclusively to salsa dancers. Our
goal is to maintain the Salsa scene
alive and kicking in New York City by offering a true
Salsa night...we can not do it without your support.
Please drop in for a dance and say hello...Salsa Para
Ti!!!
"The
Mambo Mamas"
Proving
that dancing is for people of all shapes and sizes.

My
name is Abbey and I am the founder/director of a Latin
dance performance group called The Mambo Mamas, www.MamboMamas.com.
We
are a troupe of all large-size women who just happen
to be able to dance! I just celebrated my FORTY FIFTH
Birthday (ugh!) at a wonderful party in NYC that we
call Mad About Mambo. My dance team and I throw these
parties from time to time in order
to cover some of the very expensive costs of having
a dance addiction(costumes, rehearsal space, choreography
and coaches, etc.).
I
rent a gorgeous space at a church called St. Jean Le
Baptiste on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. They have
a fantastic dance floor in their community center and
we have found it to be a perfect location for our soirees.
I then went in to promotion mode as I always do about
a month before one of the parties. I go out to all the
hot
spots
where I know the NY mambo dancers hang out and start
giving out the 5,000 flyers I have made as well as,
send out a thousand or so e-mails during each of the
four weeks. After making all these rounds at the clubs
and via the computer for the month, we usually wind
up with a few hundred of our similarly dance-addicted
friends to
participate in what inevitably turns into a fantastic
night of salsa/mambo and cha cha cha!!! Well, my Birthday
was no exception.
As
a matter of fact, I think this particular party was
even more fabulous than most!! There was something really
special in the air that Saturday night. I don't know
if it was
because it was my Birthday, but there was just a beautiful
vibe all around. Many other people mentioned that they
felt it too.
My
DJ, Ray Colon was on fire that night. The party started
at 9pm and once those 1st few people broke the ice and
got the dancing started, the floor stayed packed until
the end of the celebration at 2am. The thing I always
love about our evenings is that we always have dancers
of ALL different levels AND styles and EVERYBODY has
a blast! Nobody feels intimidated. Shyness falls by
the wayside and you see everyone on the floor by the
end of the night.
To
add to this beautiful ambiance, some of my friends performed
that night to make for an unparallel fete. I had two
AWESOME children's' groups, David Melendez'
Baby
Sweethearts and Debbie Melendez' Dancers Dreamzzz. There
were beautiful numbers by Mike Rodriguez' Latin Reflections
and Mario B's Plan B. There were
smokin'
hot choreographies by Winsome Lee's Tormenta Oriental
and CC Williams' Revelation Dancers. There was a magnificent
routine by that goddess of stage sensuality Duplessey
Walker and her Latin Dance Factory and I EVEN got a
"SPECIAL" routine by two, cute, YOUNG, hotties
who call themselves Fuego Y Candela... Not bad for an
OLD BROAD like me!!!!
All
in all it was just a perfect night, a SUPER Birthday
and an all-around great event. I
hope that all of you readers will get to attend one
of our Mad About Mambo nights when you're in NYC some
time. Our evenings are always listed on our web site
www.MamboMamas.com
and on the dance calendars of www.SalsaNewYork.com and
www.CinSationalDancer.com
