¿Que Pasa? - speaks to Jorge Cordero
about his experience in Denmark and Cuba

¿Que Pasa?: How did the band form?

I started the band with only 7 musicians in 91.
After an invitation from Festival de la Calle 8 in Miami in 1992, I changed the format to 9 members. Back then it was difficult to find good salsa musicians, so I basically had to train them up from scratch.

¿Que Pasa? How would you describe your brand of music?

We play a mix with influence from Cuban, Puertorican and New York salsa, but we try to make my our own sound

¿Que Pasa? What is your favorite track from you last album?

Jorge Cordero:“Se que te gusta”, “Echale ron” and “Se me va la vida”.

¿Que Pasa?: What are your musical influences?

Jorge Cordero:Cuban son, boleros, timba, Oscar, Gilberto, Manolito and many others.

¿Que Pasa?: I believe you are based in Denmark. What is the Salsa scene like in Denmark- Scandinavia in general ?

Jorge Cordero:Well, the most salseros are dancers and they often prefer music that they have heard before – you know, all the classics. But I think that we are succeeding in changing their listening habits. We have a growing audience in Scandinavia, which also appreciate salsa live. People who has traveled to Cuba and other Latin American countries.

¿Que Pasa?: Who are you listening to at the moment?

Jorge Cordero:Bamboleo, Manolito, Oscar, Calderon etc.

¿Que Pasa?: Where would you like to take your music to next?

Jorge Cordero:I’ll try to consolidate my style, our own sound, while I keep developing and trying out new stuff.

¿Que Pasa?: Would you ever branch out into different Latin music styles, like the popular Reggaeton?

Jorge Cordero:No, I don’t think Reggaeton will survive as an independent genre. I think it will melt together salsa and son in the long run.

¿Que Pasa? Which do you prefer, performing live or working on an album in the studio?

Jorge Cordero:Both are a challenge for me, but I love both.

¿Que Pasa? You are originally from Cuba. What made you leave Cuba?

Jorge Cordero:I married a Danish woman and grounded family in Denmark

¿Que Pasa? How does working as an artist in Cuba compare to working as an artist in Denmark?

Jorge & Anne Cordero, house in Oslo

Jorge Cordero:In Cuba you can’t play what you want if you don’t have a name and you do not have the freedom to choose whom you want to play with. All that is possible outside, but if you are a well known name in Cuba, you got a lot of privileges. But, the most important when you live in Cuba is that you are a part of a very creative ambient and where the special sabor is born.

¿Que Pasa? How do you find living Denmark? Do you miss Cuba?

Jorge Cordero:I like to live in Denmark, but I also miss Cuba – I go there as often as I can.

¿Que Pasa? Has living in the Denmark had an impact on the sound of your music?

Jorge Cordero:I don’t know, in Denmark I receive impulses from many different sources. Maybe it’s has some influence on my music. I think it’s easier for others to say.

¿Que Pasa? How do you see the future for your band?

Jorge Cordero:I hope that even more salseros around the world will appreciate our records and live performances?

¿Que Pasa? Do you plan to perform further a field in the future?

Jorge Cordero:Definitively, we will keep developing our music and try to reach even more people – not by pleasing them and giving them only what they expect, but also by fusing new genres and ideas into the music.
