History-of-Poker

There is no general agreement on how this wildly popular casino game came to be. Further back we tried to trace it, which was the most difficult to come by, mainly due to the lack of written records.

Some claim that the game we now know as poker originated with As-Nas, a card game played in Persia since the 17th century. Using a pack of 25 cards with 5 suits, As-Nas is played very much like poker only without flushes and straights. Payout hands include Full, Three of a Kind and Pair, and the game involves a round of betting based on the 5 cards each player is dealt. They are allowed to place bets after seeing their cards or bets go blind, and call, raise or fold. And bluff while doing it! The only problem with this theory, apart from the missing written source above, is that there is no evidence of how the As-Nas game might spread to other parts of the world.

From Europe to America and Back

Other historians believe that the true ancestor of poker is the 16th century Spanish game Primero, which about 100 years later was translated into Poque in France and Pochen in Germany. The game features three cards that are dealt to each player and involves bluffing and betting. The French colonies brought Poque to North America, where the first recorded mention of it dates back to 1829 in New Orleans. A game featuring a deck of 20 cards played by four players who will bet whose hand is the most valuable. From there, it spreads by boat on the Mississippi River westward and can be found in salons across the country during the Wild West period.

During the late 19th century, US ministers to Great Britain shared a game at Queen Victoria’s court. While trying to teach his hosts how to play poker, General Schenck also created written guides to help them learn. After its first entry into Europe, it took decades and the influence of American soldiers participating in World War I to achieve wider acceptance of poker among European players.

Game Continues to Develop

Poker continued to evolve to introduce the five-card draw, seven-card studs, and Texas Hold’em, the first variant to use community cards. Tournament games were launched on American Casinos with the start of the World Series of Poker in 1970. It all started when Benny Binion, a well-known Las Vegas gambler and casino boss, invited several famous poker players to participate in a tournament that took place at Horseshoe Casino. Then the WSOP launched a “circuit” tournament across the US, and today boasts the title of the largest and longest running gaming event in the world.

Thanks to the development of the Internet, these increasingly popular games are accessible outside of land-based casinos. Online poker was available in the mid-1990s, originally played for free, and the first online poker room, Planet Poker, appeared in 1998. This was soon overtaken by other gaming venues, and in September 2009 Poker Spot was the first online poker room. that offers tournaments. Even though Poker Spot went bankrupt due to problems with collecting deposits from its payment processing companies, the incident did not discourage other providers from offering tournaments. The billing issue was solved in large part thanks to e-cash, especially Neteller, which allowed players to make deposits without having to use a credit card and collect their money faster.
