¿Que Pasa? Magazine catches up with Nancy Murillo Colombian Singer base in Paris.

¿Que Pasa?: Who is Nancy Murillo?

Nancy: Nancy Murillo is an artist full of life, generous and hot (“cálida”) on stage due perhaps to the city where I was born: Cali, the capital of salsa of Colombia!
24 Celsius degrees most of the year

¿Que Pasa?: When did you realize you had a love for singing?

Nancy: I’ve always loved singing, because, as an actress, I’ve always performed in plays where I had to sing and dance! But I really dedicated myself to music when I arrived France. Over the time my heart chose. It had become obvious!

¿Que Pasa?: What are your influences?

Nancy: Latin musics because it is my culture! But I greatly appreciate jazz and funk, and also electronic music. This is also the musical direction of my work : the perfect fusion of cultures, rhythms, peoples!

¿Que Pasa?: How would you describe your music?

Nancy: My album Tia Yova was born of a musical experience with one of the groups I toured with: LOS SOMBRES HEROS. We self-produced part of the album and a few years later I imposed myself to finalize it because I needed to go after this musical path. This album is meant “traditional” in the sense we play cumbias and a few salsas. First and foremost this album helped me to gain confidence as a writer (I wrote all the lyrics). It was such a great experience!

¿Que Pasa?: What track is requested the most in your last CD and why?

Nancy: Well, the most popular songs are “CHONTADURO” and “BARRENDERA”. Because the former speaks of an aphrodisiac fruit from the Colombian Pacific, but also of tradition, of the land of my parents, of my childhood memories! It is an ode to my city: Cali-Calido calidoscopio! And BARRENDERA because it tells the same old story of a world traveler who goes abroad to get some work in order to help his family with the sweat of his brow...to pay for the studies of his brothers who expect so much from him...

¿Que Pasa?: What is one thing you know now, that wish you knew when you started in your career as a singer?

Nancy: The significance of …the extension of the vowels! Indeed! It is crucial to know the vocal techniques ... It is reassuring! But I think we never stop learning!
I say there aren’t any bad gigs! Because any new experience helps you to refine your show for the next time!

¿Que Pasa?: Who was your inspiration or favourite Artist?

Nancy: Always FUEGO (fire) songstresses like CELIA CRUZ, LA LUPE, TINA TURNER, ARETHA FRANKLIN, JANIS JOPLIN. I love to carry my audience - and myself- away so I give it all to them when I am on stage....There is no other reason. I have to be generous and that is what the audience is looking for!

¿Que Pasa?: What was the best piece of advice you were ever given?

Nancy: On the path of life, never completely close the doors

¿Que Pasa?: What are your ambitions for the future?

Nancy: Make discover a different vision of Colombia to as many people as possible.
