The IV Popular Dances Meting of Cuba will display
all the knowledge about the popular Cuban dances,
as well as its background and impact around the
world. Genuine personalities of the Ball Dance,
famous dancers and important Folk Companies will
participate at the event, drawing the attention
to the JJ Company which has been the main impulse
in all this meetings during its four years of
its inauguration.
The event will have among its activities debates
about the popular dance roll in the Cuban culture,
conferences, prime classes and workshops of the
main Cuban dances. It will be a great opportunity
regarding the popular dance and its influence
among other dance performances.

The Association of Scenic Artists of the Union
of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the
Artistic Agency Caricatos in coordination with
the Cuban Convention Bureau and the Cultural Tourism
Agency Paradiso, offer the Workshop on the Organization
of Cinematographic Production in 2006. The workshop
has been conceived for people that are interested
in knowing about the fundamental aspects on said
themes, such as the professional development of
those who have participated in some of these activities
without having had an ample corresponding experience
or academic formation.

INTERNACIONAL HAVANA BALLET FESTIVAL

Presided over by the absolute prima ballerina
Alicia Alonso, this event convenes important companies
and ballerinas from all over the world who will
present before an appreciative public together
with the National Ballet of Cuba, as host, as
well as other groups of the island. As in previous
occasions, the festival includes theoretical events,
artistic galas, expositions, and an important
repertoire of classic and contemporary ballet.
The Ballet Festival first took place in 1960 and
since then has included the present of important
companies, personalities and lovers of dance who
have brought the best of their art to the Cuban
stage.

21ST INTERNATIONAL HAVANA CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL

In every edition, this event offers a different
and dynamic program aimed at promoting new and
recognized contemporary musical pieces, as well
new Cuban bands, composers, directors, and soloists
of high artistic level. The best concert halls
in Havana, such as the Amadeo Roldán Theater,
the National Theater, and the Casa de las Américas,
are the habitual scenes for this meeting. In addition
to symphonic, electroacoustic and choir concerts,
there are also lectures, auditions, and working
meetings, where composers, singers, and experts
on music from different generations, express their
opinions concerning the most recent aesthetic
trends in our continent, illustrated with recordings
and live performances.

MATAMOROS SON INTERNATIONAL SON FESTIVAL

Santiago of Cuba
«Son» is a musical and dance genre
that’s an indispensable part of Cuban culture
and its constant evolution and enrichment. The
origin of Son is in the eastern area of Cuba.
The 19th century Santiago streets and balconies
saw it born – it arrived to the capital
in 1920 -, reason enough for the beautiful Santiago
de Cuba city to be the principal site for this
event that convenes the great figures of popular
and tradicional Cuban music and its most awarded
interpreters.
The quality of the cultural event is ensured by
the presiding figure, Adalberto Álvarez,
awarded Cuban musician and composer, principal
cultivator and defendor of today’s Cuban
son.

CULTURE CELEBRATION

An essential component of the Cuban ancestral
mix is Spanish culture, which arrived to us -
during a foundational coexistence of more than
four centuries –from the Castilian language
to expressions of daily life, present today in
our cultural storehouse. The Iberoamerican Culture
Celebration is an event that rescues and promotes
roots and Hispanic background in the Cuban nation.
The streets and parks of the city of Holguin will
serve as the living scene -lively and natural-
for a week for the development of a wide program
of concerts, expositions, workshops and popular
celebrations, with the presence of important solists,
creators, Cuban groups and those invited from
the whole Iberoamerican region. The hospitality
and cultural/tourist installations in Holguin
will guarantee the enjoyment of these meetings.

DEL TAMBOR

This Festival of the Tambor, the «Guillermo
Barreto in memorial» is a unique opportunity
to enjoy the strength, variety, and talent of
the Cuban drum players in concerts and other activities,
as well as of the new generations who will compete
to obtain the top awards in the Contest, giving
them also the possibility to share the scene with
top figures of the genre during the closing show
of the event. Contests, concerts, theoretical
sessions, the playing of drums, master lectures
on percussion and of folkloric dances are the
activities to be enjoyed. Different overseas musicians,
of high international prestige, will also participate
in this Fest, which will constitute one of the
most important events of the Cuban culture, and
of percussion, worldwide.

CASA DE LAS AMERICAS» MUSIC COMPOSITION

With the aim of encouraging and spreading the
most recent productions of symphonic, camera and
choral music of the continent, Casa de las Americas
calls upon the Caribbean and Latin American composers
to attend the second edition of the Composition
Award. On this occasion, symphonic format works
will be presented following the stylistic concepts
of the contemporary production parameters detailed
in the official call. The participating works
will enter the contest under a pen name and admissions
will be open until September 1st 2006.

The Casa de las Americas, among its multiple events,
hosts «Author Week», a space which
has become habitual in recent years, which is
dedicated to the study and promotion of the works
of writers of the region, including book presentations,
films or theatre works based on the selected author,
as well as the most anticipated of the encounter:
direct dialogue between the writer and the public.
Similar encounters have been dedicated to the
intellectuals of the field including Ricardo Piglia,
Luisa Valenzuela, Diamela Eltit, Ernesto Cardenal
and Rubem Fonseca, all of continental relevance.
With this Author Week, we’ll reaffirm a
tradition of selecting many of the most prestigious
writers of the second half of the 20th century
and beginning of the 21st century.

In 1879 Miguel Failde first played the Danzón,
a danceable music genre. This encounter’s
objective is to maintain the scope, knowledge
and permanence of this genre as an important cultural

dance groups will take place.

INTERNATIONAL «JAZZ PLAZA 2006» FESTIVAL
November 30-December 3, 2006

This is an encounter of great figures and new
talents of Jazz at world level. This time, during
its 23rd edition, the huge Latin contribution
to the genre, and the Cuban track in its foundation
stages—in New Orleans, then—and in
New York in particular, will be confirmed once
again. Master Chucho Valdés is soul and
motion, and the most complete symbol of the Cuban
piano in Jazz; thanks to his promotional activity
in the international arena, the presence of so
many great musicians in these tournaments has
turned out to be something habitual.

JO JAZZ» FESTIVAL

One of the most significant meetings of the Cuban
Musical Program is Jo Jazz Festival, which will
be a special opportunity to present the new musicians
cultivating this genre, as well as to promote
the contribution of prestigious Cuban musicians
who have a longstanding jazz experience and tradition
such as Bobby Carcasses, Alexander Brown, Martha
Cuarte and Bellita, among others.
