¿Que Pasa? - speaks to band lider Wilson M. Acevedo of Cache Salsa Canadian band

-

by Lin Skyte

¿Que Pasa? How did the members of the band meet and get together to form Cache?
Wilson:Some of us have known each other for over 10 years, and we ave played with many other different bands. After a period of time we discovered, specially the rhythm section, that we had a unique chemistry, and we decided to form our own band and that's how we became Caché.

¿Que Pasa? Introduce me to each member of the band and what they do.
Wilson:Juan Carlos Cardenas, from Venezuela, is the lead Vocal
Daniel Stone, also from Venezuela, backup Vocals and percussion
Richard Morales, from Colombia, Backup vocals and Bass
Sean Bellaviti, from Italy, is our very talented piano player
Yannick Malboeuf, French-Canadian, First trombone
Yankar González, From Cuba, Second Trombone
Randy Stirtzinger, from St. Catharines, Vibraphone
Wilson Montoya Acevedo, From Colombia, Back up vocals and Percussion

¿Que Pasa? What is it about Latin music that inspires the band to produce music in that style?
Wilson:Latin Music is uplifting, challenging, not only to play it but to write it. It is a rhythm that is not boring and not tiring. You will see musicians playing real instruments

¿Que Pasa? Which Latin bands have influenced the band the most?
Wilson:The Latin bands that have influenced Caché the most are, Sonora Ponceña, Dimension Latina and Cal Tjader old school.

¿Que Pasa? Tell me something about the marimba instrument and how it contributes to the sound and style of your music.
Wilson:Actually, Caché does not use a Marimba. We use a Vibraphone. They are related but they are two different instruments; The Marimba, unlike the Vibraphone, is made of wood and the Vibraphone is made of Aluminum plates giving the distinct sounds. The Vibraphone gives a unique sound, an identity to Caché.

¿Que Pasa? Explain a bit about the dynamics of the group and its versatility to perform numbers ranging from a duo to an eight piece band.
Wilson:We have a very unique chemistry, this comes from years of knowing each other and contributing in playing with each other in different bands. We have fun and enjoy seeing the audience dancing to our music.

¿Que Pasa?
When and where did Cache get its first major break?

Wilson:We Got our first major break playing a Latin Festival which was also televised, for over 15, 000 people

¿Que Pasa? Are there plans for Cache to perform outside of Toronto?
Wilson:Caché has had the pleasure of performing in festivals across Canada.,

¿Que Pasa? Are your audiences mostly salsa dancers and can the members of the band dance salsa?
Wilson:Our audiences are from all walks of life that enjoy music and they allow the rhythm to take control and let their feet do all the dancing... LOL Yes, all the members of Caché can dance Salsa.

¿Que Pasa? Which do you enjoy the most: touring live or recording albums, and why?
Wilson: That's a tough one... we enjoy both as they both give different levels of gratification. Touring live, is energetic, fun, you feel the enery of the audience and enjoy seeing them dance to our music... being in the Studio, although it is long hours, it gives us a chance to be with each other and come up with new and exciting ideas... it is like a family reunion where noone can take that away from us.

¿Que Pasa? Give a description of the music on your two Albums "Blended" and "The Toronto Sessions"
Wilson:There is a difference between both Cd's, and just like any other artists, we have grown and matured artistically and this shows in our music. We write from our experiences. and everyday is pretty much a new chapter, a new song.

¿Que Pasa? What's next in the pipeline for Cache?
Wilson:Third CD.. which will hopefully be out at the end of 2007. And, touring across the globe.

¿Que Pasa? What has been the single most exciting experience for the band since its inception?
Wilson:The most exciting experience? I would have to say being able to play your own music and watching the people enjoying it and dancing to it.

¿Que Pasa? Which bands would you like to perform alongside and why?
Wilson:There are so many, and the reason why is because it is people that we grew up listening to and this is not just in the 'salsa world', we are talking many artists in many genres.
