ALEJANDRO SAORIN
¿Que
Pasa? - speaks to Alejandro Saorin Argentinean singer
based in Italy and
finds out more about his experience and ambitions
in the World's Latin scene.
¿Que
Pasa?: Who is Alejandro Saorin?
Alejandro:
I’m an Argentine musician qualified
in teaching music and choir direction.
I’ve been a trumpet player for the Big Band
of the Ward Popular Music Conservatory of Buenos
Aires, for the Youth Symphonic Orchestra of La Plata
and for the dance group Roberto Libra y su Sonora
Cordobeza, with whom I still play in many major
clubs.
I had been choir director both of the Coro de Niños
of Colegio Muñis and of the
Camera choir of the School of Music Vicente Paulotti
in Buenos Aires. |
|
I’m
the director of the gospel choirs True Voice and Note
Nere of Padua.
I’ve a great experience as a author and composer
in the Latin music scene and salsa in particular.
I’m the singer of the Mezcla Latina group. I’m
also the creator, producer and singer of a number of
musicals.
¿Que
Pasa?: How did you get into Salsa?
Alejandro: When I was in Argentina
I never played salsa but I listened to it considerably.
I was a big fan of the Ruben Blades.
In 1989 I went to live in Padua, Italy. Immediately
I was invited to sing with Barrio
Latino, a local group composed of musicians normally
found in Latin music. A year later I formed the Mezcla
Latina, together with the keyboard player Ascanio Scano
and the Percussionist Marco Catinaccio, also the pianist
Luisa Catinaccio, my wife, and the Bass player Pasquale
Cosco el Pive (he was dubbed this name because he’s
the youngest of the group) joined our band.
In 1997 we published our first album entitled "Colon
Se Equivocò", followed by "Cinco y
Na Mà" and "Salsa Dura". After
these CDs I felt the desire to enhance my style and
to express my musical feeling in depth.
¿Que Pasa?What are your influences?
Alejandro:
I
think of myself as a eclectic musician. Through the years
I have acquired a extensive musical education. I have
studied classical and jazz music as well as tango and
gospel, these are genres that I still play with great
passion.
¿Que
Pasa?
What track from your CD is requested the most??
Alejandro: My album has just been published
and many tracks of it have been appreciated by a wide
audience. I think that the race is still open, I couldn’t
tell which track is the best. I love all of them indistinctively.
Que
Pasa : Which artists have you collaborated
with??
Alejandro:
The
list would be too long since I started playing music
when I was 16 and now
I’m 44. However I remember that with Mezcla Latina
we have been the supporting
group of Adalberto Alvarez y Su Son, Manolin El Medico
de La Salsa and
Mamborama. We participated in festivals in which we
were featured artists with the
Buena Vista Social Club, Pablito y su Elite, Alfredo
de La Fè. These experiences were really essential
to my development of my music.
¿Que
Pasa?
Is
it easy to get air play in Italy are there special salsa
radio stations for instance? (In the United Kingdom doesn't
exist any radio in English language to promote the Latin
Music.) ?
Alejandro:
Nothing
is easy when we talk about music. In Italy there are very
few radio stations offering Latin music, most of the Djs
and promotes only play music coming from Latin America.
Furthermore, disc jockeys are often producers themselves
and when there is an artist working in Italy they prefer
offer their own products. We can say that my music is
spread through specialized compilations (salsa.) and live
concerts.
.¿Que
Pasa?
I believe you are Argentinean based in Italy. What is
the Salsa scene like in your country and in Italy? and
in which country for you is biggest and exciting?
Alejandro: I’m the CHE of Salsa
music. In Argentina Salsa is one of the various dancing
Latin American genres, but there aren’t many bands
which play it. In Italy there’s a great deal of
passionate expert dancers. There are also lots of club
but unfortunately there are less and less concerts. This
happens because the organizers prefer arrange less complicated
events, not because people don’t like them. Exhibitions
and dance courses or evening entertainments only with
Djs are less expensive and there is no need to do the
soundcheck. Anyway, when we play with Mezcla Latina the
dancers never stop dancing and ask us to continue performing
because live salsa has always has the crowd asking for
more.
¿Que
Pasa?
How do you see the future for Alejandro Saorin?
Alejandro:
I
consider myself very lucky. I was born in the poor outskirts
of Buenos Aires and now I am a musician in Italy. I can
support my family. I didn’t expect so much for
me. But to talk about the music I’m planning a new
album. I’m sure I’m still at the
beginning of my career and believe that life will inspire
me to make great music . I hope that you like my music
as much as I do.
